MKP sent team drivers Blake Deister and Jackson Mears down to Jacksonville, Florida
over March 2-4 for the first round of the WKA Gold Cup event.
Gold Cup, which is known for being a 4-cycle series, added three 2-cycle classes for the
2012 campaign to bring in more kart count and to give the 2-cycle drivers more opportunities
for seat time. The two MKP national drivers competed in the new X-30 senior class. The X-30
motor is a TAG (Touch and Go) motor which is new to a good portion of drivers. The X-30 is
125cc motor with tons of torque on the bottom end of the motor and strong top end speed. This
motor was perfect for the track layout at Jacksonville.
Deister and Mears both had leased motors from TS racing from Florida, who is the
importer for the X-30 motor. The boys hit the track midday Friday after getting their Birel
chassis’s sent through tech and motor’s being put on. Both motors were fast and with Vega
Green tires, they were right there on top of the tense and tightly close speed charts.
On Saturday, rain was off and on all day and affected set-up and strategy for Deister and
Mears. Qualifying did not goes as plan for both, in particularly for Mears when he was on grid
and a competitor in front of him stalled his motor and in the process Mears over-flooded his
motor with fuel and had to take a DNS for qualifying.
The Pre-Final was taken place on a somewhat wet track where race officials decided to
make all competitors run Vega rain tires, but the MKP drivers and tuners decided that it was
not worth taking a chance to damage their RY-30 Birel’s with the track conditions. The Final
could not have been played any better, Deister and Mears started deep in the field and when the
green flag dropped havoc started. Deister and Mears were side by side going into the first couple
of turns around the Jacksonville circuit. The field was made it towards the pits and were three
to four wide going through the kink. Coming out of it, there was a three kart pile up that didn’t
include Deister or Mears. The boys partnered up running 4th and 5th and chased down a partner-
less 3rd place competitor. Going through the Monza, Mears was right on Deister’s bumper and
the two were paced to make their move on that lap. Mears’s kart slid up the track and onto the
extra pavement on the exit of the Monza killing the teammate’s momentum and draft. Deister cut
down the gap on 3rd place but ended up finishing 4th, while Mears finished a well respected 5th.
On Sunday, rain was on and off again during morning and race director Chuck Yoder
made the decision to let the drivers and tuners decide on whether to go out on dry’s or rain’s .
Deister and Mears decided to go out on dry’s and were respectively fast in the moderate track
conditions. Qualifying started and they were determined to set fast time. Mears ended up being
off pace by 3 ½ tenths off the pole sitter and found himself in the 4th position. Deister’s set up
was not what he wanted and found himself at the bottom of the charts, but he was ready to make
move up through the field. The Pre-Final was calm and collective which Mears and Deister both
finished inside the top six. The Final was much anticipated and both drivers were poised and
ready to make their move for the top spot. Mears started 3rd and ran that for a great portion of the
race. On the final lap of the race, Mears was going down the long three football field length back
stretch and trading decals with another competitor. The competitor tried to bully Mears but he
would not allow that. Going into the final turn, Mears was hit hard on his left side and drove over
the high bank last turn and ended his race. Mears was out of the race and his chance of podium
was out of the picture. While all of the controversy was going on, Deister took advantage of the
opportunity and placed 4th in a dirty final.
Overall, the weekend was a great learning experience for our motor program and
tires. Drivers and tuners learned a lot about kart set up and feel as if they will have a better
understanding to improve on the next event. The two team drivers will compete at the next event in Barnesville, Georgia throughout April 27-29.

With a rough start to the day for all four of team Birel MKP drivers; Alex Tagliani, Tony Stewart, Ed Carpenter, and John Andretti. They were down on grip due to track conditions. Tony Stewart sitting 6th place to start the final Pro race for team NASCAR, John Andretti starting in 8th postition for team NASCAR, and Alex Tagliani starting 9th for team IndyCar.

As all 11 drivers were anxious to get to the front of the pack, there was some contact throughout the race. This shuffled leader Austin Dillon back a couple spots and gave Tony Stewart a good chance to catch up to the lead pack. Tony’s chassis coming in about lap 10 he began to pick up the pace and maneuver by his opponents. With Tagliani and Andretti close behind they filled the gaps Tony was leaving.

Tony Stewart had some interference with the crash barriers on the straight away causing him to spin out but he kept in it without managing to lose any positions. As he held off his competitors for the remaining laps, Tagliani and Andretti were close behind. As the checkered flag flew, the MKP drivers took all podium positions with Tony Stewart as the inaugural 2011 Indy Karting Classic Champion, Alex Tagliani taking 2nd place, and John Andretti in 3rd.
